Over the years, there have been a variety of exciting sports teams in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Some of the sports teams are in professional leagues whereas others are in semi-professional leagues.
Vancouver has a rich history of sporting teams but unfortunately, Vancouver does not have a tremendous amount of success with winning it all. Despite this, Vancouver has one of the most die-hard and loyal fan bases in Canada for a variety of sports. Attending a sporting event in Vancouver is a very worthwhile outing.
Sports Teams In Vancouver
The Vancouver Canucks are perhaps the most popular of all the sports teams in Vancouver. The Canucks joined the NHL in 1970. Prior to 1970, they had a rather successful team in the Western Hockey League.
The Vancouver Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup but they have been to the finals three times. Some of the more notable hockey players of the last 50 years to have entertained Canuck fans include Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Roberto Luongo, Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden, and Orland Kurtenbach, just to name a few.
The BC Lions play in the Canadian Football League (CFL). They began playing in 1954 at Empire Stadium and have won six Grey cups since they began playing.
Some of the more notable players during the last 60+ years include Joe Kapp (who also played for the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL), Lui Passaglia, Willie Fleming, Jim "Dirty Thirty" Young, Geroy Simon, By Baily, and Al Wilson, just to name a few.
The Vancouver Whitecaps played their first match in 1974 against the San Jose Earthquakes. In 1979 they became the first professional sports team in Vancouver to win a major North American Championship.
During the next few decades, they played in a variety of professional soccer leagues including NASL, CSL, APSL, and MSL. The most notable Whitecap player, who later became their coach, was Bobby Lenarduzzi.
The Vancouver Grizzlies were a Canadian Professional Basketball team that played in the Western Conference of the NBA. In 1995, the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies began playing in the NBA and were the only 2 professional basketball teams.
During the 2000-01 season, however, the Vancouver Grizzlies were relocated to Memphis, Tennessee. The new team was named the Memphis Grizzlies. The Vancouver Grizzlies played their home games at Rogers Arena, which is the same arena where the Vancouver Canucks play.
Other minor sports teams that either play or have played in Vancouver include the Vancouver Canadians, Vancouver Titans, Vancouver Mounties, and the Vancouver Warriors.
